Beaudesert & Tamborine
Beaudesert beckons as an authentic experience of rural life. One of Australia 's equestrian capitals is the Gold Coast Hinterland area & it is the backdrop for fine horses and horsemanship. This area seems to almost make you take a step back in time to rolling rural landscapes. Less than an hour from central beach locations, you are in a completely different culture.
Historic buildings mark more than 150 years of settlement as a cattle kingdom - follow historic trails past grand homesteads and vaulted timber churches. For thousands of years, the aboriginal people have called the Beechmont Plateau ‘the place of the Binnabura', referring to the areas blessing of ancient Antarctic Beech trees.
The Beechmont Plateau is one of the numerous northerly spurs of the McPherson Range located south of Tamborine Mountain on the way to Lamington National Park . On clear days, the area is home to the entertainers of the skies such as hang-gliders, model airplane enthusiasts and the natural masters, our native birds.
Each year starting on the Queens Birthday weekend the Beaudesert Country & Horse Festival is held. It is 10 days of entertainment and fun for the residents of Beaudesert Shire.
Mount Tamborine offers excellent Gold Coast Views and the famous Gallery Walk strip of art and craft shops and plenty of restaurants. Avocados, kiwi fruit and rhubarb head a long list of commercial crops grown around the district. There is an immense variety of fauna - Albert lyrebirds, lorikeets, scrub turkeys, bower and whip birds are easily seen, & there are platypuses in the hidden streams, glowworms in the rainforest caves - clearly visible at dusk and the variety of flora ranges from Australian natives, semi-tropical to the gentle flora of cooler climates.
In addition, the meaning of the word Tamborine? It has nothing to do with the musical instrument! The Mountain was the home of the Wangeribura tribe and supplied the people with a great deal of food. The Wangeribura people used to dig the wild yam, and yams were plentiful at the foot of the Mountain. History tells us it's from two Australian aboriginal words – ‘Tam', meaning yam or wild potato and ‘Borine' meaning ‘a water place near a cliff'. The original site near the village of Tamborine at the base of the mountain is said to be still there.
Tamborine District encompass North Tamborine , Eagle Heights, & Mt Tamborine. Only 30 minutes from central Gold Coast beaches, Tamborine National Park is Queensland 's first national park reserve.
Many of the suburbs in this area are “historic townships” & still enjoy renown as a fertile and productive environment with their fair share of eateries, wineries, accommodations and shops. It is the perfect place to experience country living and an easy rural atmosphere. The quaint villages are famous for arts, crafts and antiques, with markets held on the 1st, 2nd and last Sunday at various locations. A flourishing boutique winery industry taking advantage of the soils and climate is also fast becoming a favourite attraction for visitors.
Also popular, Yulefest - Christmas in July is held from mid July to early August each year, with mountain top accommodation houses, restaurants, cafes and attractions decked out in festive seasonal decorations, offering packages and traditional Christmas fayre, around equally traditional open fires, warming the crisp winter nights. It is accessible from the Pacific Highway at Beenleigh, Oxenford and Nerang, and via scenic hinterland routes at Beaudesert and Canungra in the west. Various roads lead to a world of national parks, breathtaking scenery by day and the lights of the Gold Coast spread out in glittering array by night.

Currumbin
Currumbin has a distinctive landscape. Elephant Rock, Flat Rock and Currumbin Rock offer silhouettes against the sky with rolling surf, enclosing a discrete surfing beach. Current building height limits keep the area low-key, which adds to its beautiful terrain. Some properties to the south have absolute beach frontage and the elevated land provides opportunities for views of the coast. Many of the houses at Currumbin date from the period of its earliest subdivision and the area contains a substantial grouping of 'fibro' beach houses.
Generally, the area contains more natural vegetation than other areas of the coast due in part to the difficulty of building on the steep hillsides. There are pretty walks such as the Oceanway walk to Tugun crossing Currumbin Creek to Rockview Park , or you could use Currumbin as a base to explore – it is close to a major wildlife sanctuary with the world's largest collection of Australian native animals. The usual commercial development of the Gold Coast Highway is absent as the road winds over the headland and past the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Sanctuary comprises a substantial area of land on both sides of the highway adjacent to Flat Rock Creek. One of the highlights of the sanctuary is the flock of brightly coloured lorikeets that regularly fly to the sanctuary to feed. There is a variety of Australian marsupials there too, like kangaroos, koalas and emus.
